CLEAN Up Australia founder Ian Kiernan cleaned up again in this week's Gosford-Lord Howe Island race, steering Sanyo Maris to its second successive IRC victory.
The 9.3-metre yawl, built in 1958 for marine artist Jack Earl, had three hours to spare when it crossed the finish line.
Sailing conditions were ideal for the oldest, smallest and lowest-rating yacht in the fleet of 14 that set sail from Broken Bay last Saturday close reaching with some spinnaker runs all the way.
"I've never sailed in a race quite like this one . . . it was such a pleasant sail across to this magnificent island," Kiernan said.
Meanwhile, preparations for the inaugural Butlers Newcastle Round Lord Howe Island Race are in full swing. The notice of race will be posted on the Newcastle Cruising Yacht club website on November 16.
The race starts at 3pm on May 9 (Mother's Day) next year, and organisers already have 30 expressions of interest, including one from supermaxi Lahana.
