MORE than 200 public, Catholic and independent schools in an area from the Central Coast, to Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, the Coalfields, Taree, Scone and Merriwa have been invited to enter the 2010 Newcastle Herald/Newcastle Permanent Building Society school newspaper competition.
In 2010 about 90 schools will again get the chance to publish a two-page newspaper in The Herald during terms two, three and four.
Schools that enter provide a masthead, six news stories including five with pictures, an editorial accompanied by a cartoon and an advertisement for the building society based on one of three themes.
They also get a unique opportunity to bring a group of 15 students to Fairfax Regional Printers at Beresfield to see a newspaper printing operation in action.
The co-ordinator of the competition is also available to visit schools to speak to the co-ordinating teacher and students about how to approach the task and submit the material.
Prizes are provided by the building society in both the primary and high school categories for best overall paper, young writer of the year, and best news story, picture, editorial, editorial cartoon and advertisement.
Schools that want more information should contact competition co-ordinator Richard French on 4979 5973 or by email at rfrench@theherald.com .
